Travel Advisory

Falling ill while travelling overseas is an inconvenience as medical services may not be widely available or as affordable as in Singapore. Fortunately, you can take a few simple precautions to help you stay healthy on your trip.

Medical Kit for travelling1. Visit your doctor

4 to 6 weeks before your trip, pay your family doctor a visit and ask if you require any vaccinations for the places you plan to visit. You may also wish to get the doctor to put together a travel medicine kit for you.

2. Avoid questionable food

When you are unsure about the hygiene and quality of the food, try to eat only food that is thoroughly cooked and served hot. Drink only boiled or bottled water. This will reduce your chances of getting diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera and hepatitis A.

3. Apply insect repellent

Mosquitoes can potentially transmit deadly diseases like malaria and dengue. To avoid getting bitten, apply insect repellent to all exposed skin surfaces and reapply as it wears off. To further reduce your chances of getting bitten, wear long sleeved clothing and long pants in light coloured material.

4. Avoid casual sex

It is generally difficult to tell if a person has sexually transmitted diseases so to prevent yourself from getting infected, avoid all forms of casual sex. Be especially cautious when drinking alcohol since intoxication lowers inhibitions.
